Ribbons of silk taffeta in dusty blue, soft purple, cream, and grey are laid across the shoulders of this black wool cape in layered arcs, each one cut, positioned, and stitched by hand. The story

TIDE

The piece was drawn as a tide. Ribbons of silk taffeta are layered across the shoulders in soft arcs, one above the next, echoing the parallel lines that seawater leaves behind on a shore as it pulls back. The palette was chosen the same way. Dusty blue, paler blue, cream, soft purple, grey. The colors of a bay at first light, arranged in the order they would appear as the sky lifts and the water catches the sun. Wool holds the whole composition, weighted enough to keep its shape and to hold warmth through cold evenings. Ribbons of taffeta silk catch the light where the wool absorbs it, so the piece reads differently up close than from a distance. A cape designed to carry the memory of water without ever showing any.
