Oyster Linen Woodblock Press

Sale price$330.00
Size

Hội An lanterns in a full palette of color are hand-stamped across the front of this tunic, gathered at the shoulders and chest like a festival caught mid-air. Fine running-stitch embroidery in blue traces the outline of each lantern, and the composition wraps around toward the back. Stamped, embroidered, and finished by hand at the Hanoi atelier.

The story

LANTERN FESTIVAL

On the full moon of every month, Hội An turns off its electric lights. What follows isn't quiet. Silk lanterns fill the alleys, hang from the eaves of every shophouse, and drift downriver on the Thu Bồn. The streets fill with the sound of children, food, music, and the color of thousands of paper globes glowing at once. It is not a memory of a lantern. It is a whole festival, happening at once. This tunic was designed to carry that scene. Not one lantern in soft indigo, but many, bright and close together, gathered like the middle of the alley on the loudest night of the year. Each shape is hand-stamped with a carved wooden block, then traced by hand in fine running-stitch embroidery. Cut from linen in a relaxed silhouette with an asymmetrical hem, the tunic moves easily through warm evenings. A tunic that carries a festival across the shoulders.
