Panels of hand-woven brocade from the Thái ethnic community of northern Vietnam frame the neckline, sleeves, and hem of this long tunic. Cut from Dui To in carmine and traced along the front with fine embroidered stitches, the piece is finished with small hand-stitched buttons. Woven, joined, and finished by hand at the Hanoi atelier.

The story
EMPRESS
The black-and-white panels running along the neckline, sleeves, and hem of this tunic are hand-woven brocade from the Thái, one of the ethnic communities of Vietnam's northern highlands. In the provinces of Điện Biên, Sơn La, and Yên Bái, Thái weavers have worked this cloth for generations on wooden looms, each pattern held in memory and taught from mother to daughter. The geometry is tight, considered, and among the oldest textile traditions in the country. At the atelier in Hanoi, these panels are joined to a body of Dui To, a light Vietnamese cotton. The seams are traced with hand-embroidered stitches and the front is finished with small hand-stitched buttons, done one at a time. A piece that carries two crafts, from two parts of Vietnam, held together by a third. Designer Diego Cortizas.
